So many people think distance relationships cannot work in the long term because proximity is very important in relationship and it is difficult to know what the other person is doing.
Here is the case we do not choose who we fall for and some have fallen for people who leave far from them due to studies or life circumstance. If you are part of those not having their other half not close to them, here are some tips to help you make the relationship work.
1. TRUST EACH OTHER
It is sometimes difficult to trust your partner when you are in long distance relationship. You will be making scenarios of things he or she might be doing over there, asking yourself so many questions, if really you are the only one in his life? Is he or she not cheating? Since you are not there, you cannot be sure of anything, you can only trust him or her.
2. BE HONEST TO EACH OTHER
Be honest about your likes, dislikes, feelings, your fears, how jealous you can be, what toxic traits you are working on. If you like hearing naughty stuff on calls, inform your partner. If you are not also feeling well after an exam or for no reason, tell your partner about your current mood so he or she can understand you. Keeping quiet or hiding things will give room to assumptions.
3. KNOW EACH OTHER’S TIME TABLE
Communicate about your free time and busy hours. If you are going to be kept by something, let your partner know about it. It might be difficult if you are not living in the same time zone but try to schedule things so you can communicate regularly.
4. DO THINGS TOGETHER
Even with the distance, you can still do things together. Social media apps are now including the watch together feature. You can watch music videos, movies, documentaries together. You can equally read books, listen to podcasts or work out together.
5. PLAN THE FUTURE TOGETHER
Where are you seeing yourself in the next years to come? Where are you going to do your National Service? When and how are we going to move closer? How many children you want to have? These are some questions you need to answer together this will help have a road map for the relationship. Try to build a bigger picture.
These 5 tips coupled with optimism can make your distance relationship work.
